Kitakyushu Wine Seminar - Beaujolais - Sun 1 March - Pot au Feu ワインセミナー(北九州) ボジョレー 3/1(日) ポトフ

Dear all, our next seminar will take plat at Pot-Au-Feu on Sunday 1 March.

For a change we will go to Beaujolais. I would like to convince you that good red wines may exist outside of Burgundy.

Beaujolais wines can be absolutely great (and remain pricewise accessible!)

This time we thought it would a good idea to taste them with food. Takahashi-San is happy to welcome the event at his  restaturant in Kokura.  His Bouchon-style cuisine suits perfectly the true spirit of Crus Beaujolais.

Takahashi-San will cook something for us. No non-sense.

Do you wonder whether Beaujolais wine could age?

We shall have a vertical tasting with 96, 00, 03, 11, 13 vintages from Domaine Paul Janin Et Fils in Moulin-À-Vent. I was stunned by the finesse and depth of this wine, it is really in the spirit of the great Pinot Noir. We will also taste their entry price wine a Beaujolais-Village. We will also taste  the recent production of Domaine Pierre Vessigaud in Saint-Amour. Some of you already know his Macon-Fuissé or Pouilly-Fuissé. His Saint-Amour wine is just lovely (as its name would suggest), and its riduculous price made it even more enjoyable.

The Beaujolais area is located at the south of Burgundy, but red wines are made of Gamay. I found vintages 11, 12, 13 in Burgundy rather weak in red and much too expensive, therefore I started investigating other areas for more affordable wines. What I tasted in Bordeaux was poor (as usual?) and I eventually found really great wines and high quality standards in Beaujolais.

Beaujolais suffer from a bad reputation due to its bulk wines and the dreadful Beaujolais nouveau. This has to be distinguished from the Cru Beaujolais. Very recently winemakers' syndicate in Beaujolais split in two with the Grands Crus on one side and the rest on the other side.
There are 10 Cru Beaujolais, namely: Côtes de Brouilly, Brouilly, Regnié, Morgon, Chiroubles, Fleurie, Moulin-À-Vent, Chenas, Julienas and Saint-Amour.

One has to look for the best producers, the quality exits there, winemaking styles can be quite different... It could well be the best ratio Q/P right now with french wines.

You will find below a few more pics and videos of our quest for Beaujolais.  Hopefully we get back there!
